Suzi BlackLost: 130 Pounds
Gained: A New Life

Today, Suzi is an active young grandmother who loves cycling, gardening, and especially, romping around with her three-year-old grandson, Baylee. But it wasn’t always that way.

Once weighing 277 pounds, Suzi’s high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other conditions had her on eight different prescription medications. She suffered from sleep apnea and depression, and had undergone multiple surgeries on her feet. Her body hurt all the time, and she hated to exercise.

“I tried so many diets and drugs from the age of 27 to 40,” Suzi says, “and I didn’t exercise much. I think it really messed up my metabolism.”

Before deciding to have gastric bypass surgery, Suzi did her research to learn all she could about the different types of procedures. Once she made her decision, it took her two months to get up the courage to call Dr. Christian Oakley at St. Luke’s Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinic. One there, she says, he made her feel completely at ease.

“I would tell anyone considering surgery to go to Dr. Oakley,” says Suzi. “He’s got it all figured out. He saved my life.”

After gastric bypass surgery, Suzi lost not only 130 pounds but also her health problems and the prescription drugs that went with them. Most important though is what she gained: a happier, more active, more confident life, with more quality time with her sons, little Baylee, and her husband.

“We’re even more in love,” she says. “And I have my life back. It was so worth it.”

Suzi says she has done everything Dr. Oakley has asked her to do, following his instructions to a T. “I am very careful about what I eat,” she says. “I never want to be overweight again.”

Suzi had gastric bypass surgery at age 40; she is now 44 and going strong.

“If someone asked me if they should have the surgery, I would tell them my story,” she says. “I would encourage them to look into it and do it if it’s right for them. But they have to know it’s not a diet fix – you have to totally want it.”
